5 Best Habits To Start in 2018

Gentrifanatics!

Thank you for making this blog awesome!

It takes 21 days to form a habit.

That’s it, 21 days.

I’m sure you agree that habits have a kind of bad wrap. You may think of drugs, or nail biting!

Really a habit is just a settled or regular tendency or practice.

Just like practice, it’s not enough to just practice, you need to practice correctly. It’s not enough to form habits, pick the best things to make into habits.

Practice Does Not Make Perfect

In this post you’ll learn 5 awesome habits guaranteed to make your life at least a little bit better…if you do them.

1. A Morning Routine

Having a morning routine is one of the main habits cited by successful people when they speak about how they remain successful.
Think about what your morning routine is. You have one even if you dont realize it.
What’s the first thing you do when you wake up from your sleep? How about the first thing you think about? Of course it varies but it’s worth taking time over the next few days to notice what your routine is.
Some peoples routine may be to wake up and hit snooze so they can get those extra 5-10 minutes of irrelevant sleep!

Maybe the first thing you think about is man I dont want to go to work!

I can attest that having a positive routine to start your morning sets the tone for your day. There’s a book by Hal Elrod called the Miracle Morning and its absolutely worth checking out.

My morning starts out with a routine that I learned in the Miracle Morning and as soon as I wake up it goes like this for the first 6 minutes of each day:

1. Silence – Sit or lay in silence, breathe deeply and think about what you’re grateful for.

2. Affirmations – Write down on paper or in your phone what your purpose is, what your goals are, and anything else that reminds you of your unlimited potential, then read them OUT LOUD to yourself.

3. Visualization – Close your eyes and visualize your day going perfectly. Envision being happy and accomplishing everything you need to.

4. Scribing – Physically write down what you’re grateful for and what you’re proud of. Also write the results that you’re committed to creating for the day.
5. Reading – Take a minute to read a few pages in a self help book or article. Try to learn something you can implement in your day.
6. Exercise – Stand up, do jumping jacks, yoga poses, run in place, whatever gets your heart pumping!

2. Automation

Full disclosure, automation isn’t really a habit per se because it’s something you do once and then it gets done for you!

Take all of your bills and put them on auto pay. You can start off small. Many people are worried at first because they think “what if my money isn’t there when they take the bill out”? Or even, “What if I need to pay late to pay another bill”?

Both of those reasons make sense to me because I’ve been in both of those situations.

Start with your cell phone bill and slowly add.

It’s not just bills that should be automated.

Investments and savings should automatically come out of your pay checks. Setting up allotments to go into an investment account is a great way to trick yourself into building up a pile of cash.

One really good resource that I use is called Acorns. It rounds up your purchases to the nearest dollar and then takes the change and invests it in index funds.

There are a bunch of companies that do similar things, do your research!

Where the habit part comes in with automation is that you should make it a habit to automate whatever you can.

When a new bill or investment comes up make it a habit to ask yourself, “can I automate this”?

If so, do it!

3. Making short term goals (and accomplishing)

In order to get what you want you need to know what you want.

Writing down your short term goals and putting them where you can see them is a great way to keep yourself motivated and focused.

Of course you need to accomplish your goals.

Once you do make new goals and go at it again.

There’s something to be said for constantly having your goals right in front of your face every day.

In previous post we talked about SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time Bound.

For example, one of my goals is to have a Net Worth of $2M by the year 2023.

Usually anything within the next 5 years is considered short term but you can even make these weekly or daily goals!

When you make goals almost everything you do should be in furtherance of those goals.

4. Saying No (if it does not fit into your goals)

If someone (even yourself) wants you to do something that doesn’t fit into your goals say NO!

Setting up a plan for yourself is important.

Dont get detailed by unnecessary things.

Saying no to someone often feels confrontational for us and as humans we look to avoid confrontation.

All this is fine but it’s easier to say no when you have defined goals, look at them daily and then realize what you’re being asked to do will hold you back.

Partying, extra work, junk food, alcohol, and even relationships are just some of the things you may have to say no to.

When that friend asks you to help them move, if you have the time do it, but remember, it’s ok to say no sometimes. Especially when what you’re doing is hindering you from reaching your goals.

5. Positive self talk

Positive self talk is the single most important habit that you need to start.

How many times have you told yourself, “I applied for that job but I probably wont get it”, or “I’m too busy this week to worry about eating right”.

You need to make sure the voice in your head is being nice.

Dont talk to yourself in a way that you wouldn’t let others talk to you!

First start with replacing “I cant” with “how can I”.

This simple mindset shift is life changing.

Countless times I’ve told myself, “I cant buy this house right now, it would deplete all my savings”.

Once I shifted and started saying “how can I buy this house even though I dont have much money” possibilities started opening up in my mind.

Negative thoughts and words have the ability to negatively impact your life. Speak positively to yourself and others and watch the positive change!
